In a moving prelude to Nelson Mandela Day, Hyde Park Corner’s Centre Court transformed into a vibrant, heartfelt exhibition space on Tuesday afternoon, capturing the spirit of ubuntu and creative solidarity. More than 670 brightly coloured scarves, each hand-knitted by the incredible Mockingbird KnitWits, adorned the space in a powerful gesture of warmth and generosity. These scarves, later to be donated to communities in need across Gauteng, stood as visual reminders of Madiba’s enduring legacy of service and kindness.
Guests gathered in high spirits beneath canopies of wool and hope, where the energy was equal parts stylish and soulful. The event wasn’t just a display of compassion—it was a celebration of community, creativity, and love, drawing in local celebrities and change makers alike.
Among the guests was reality star and Mandela Day ambassador Khosi Twala, who brought an extra layer of charm as she arrived arm-in-arm with her beloved canine companion. The event’s unique blend of fashion and philanthropy extended to furry friends as well, with beautifully crafted designer dog houses on display—each an artistic expression from some of South Africa’s top fashion labels.
Craig Jacobs of Fundudzi, known for his eco-conscious storytelling through design, presented a sleek and sustainable dog home inspired by African geometry. Imprint ZA channeled bold prints and cultural symbolism into a statement piece that stood out in the courtyard. Rubicon, celebrated for elegance and architectural silhouettes, brought a minimalist doghouse that spoke volumes with less. And The Bam Collective, ever avant-garde, fused whimsical color and form to create a kennel that was nothing short of couture.
The evening was as stylish as it was meaningful, with live acoustic music providing a gentle soundtrack to heartfelt conversations and photo ops alongside the cascades of yarn. The scarves themselves—knitted with care by the Mockingbird KnitWits, a network of compassionate creatives—were tagged with messages of hope and inspiration.
Hyde Park Corner’s collaboration with this year’s Nelson Mandela Day initiative, in partnership with 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, reminded guests of the enduring power of giving, no matter the form. Be it through fabric, fashion, or furry friends, last night proved that warmth—literal and emotional—has the power to unite.
As July 18 draws nearer, the scarves will begin their journey into the arms of those who need them most. But the message left in Centre Court lingers: “It’s not just about what we do on Mandela Day. It’s about the legacy we knit together all year round.”
