About the project

In a bold move that bridges corporate responsibility with grassroots impact, Heineken Beverages has launched a transformative initiative aimed at revitalising township taverns across South Africa. This forward-thinking program isn’t just about modernising physical spaces—it’s about reshaping lives, stimulating local economies, and sowing the seeds of generational wealth in communities long overlooked by traditional development models.

Uplifting the Local Economy

Township taverns have always been more than places to unwind—they are vital micro-economies. Heineken recognizes their untapped potential. Through infrastructure investment, skills development, and product innovation, the company is breathing new life into these local hubs. Improved service standards, access to formalized supply chains, and increased foot traffic are creating ripple effects that support jobs, stimulate spending, and build sustainable businesses.

Building Stronger Communities

At the heart of the transformation lies a deep commitment to community upliftment. Heineken is working closely with tavern owners to create safe, inclusive, and vibrant social spaces that reflect the spirit of the neighborhoods they serve. By investing in clean energy, safety measures, and community-driven events, these taverns are evolving into centers of pride, culture, and connection.

Collaboration with Local Stakeholders

The success of this initiative hinges on collaboration. Heineken has partnered with local policing forums, regulatory bodies, suppliers, and development agencies to ensure a shared vision and a coordinated approach. Tavern owners are not just recipients of change—they are active participants, guiding the transformation to suit the unique identity and needs of their communities.

Last week, Heineken Beverages  invited media through to Alexandra Township, North east of Johannesburg where journalists were ushered to the outlets which have been the recipients of the tarven transformation initiative, one of them being Thathe Tarven owned by a strong woman Florence, who has grown from strength to strength and with the growth of the business has been able employ more other people. Her contribution to curbing unemployment marks a significance in local economy

The outlet visits, which preceded the roundtable, offered an immersive look at the early successes and real-world impact of the pilot phase of the programme. These township-based outlets are part of a growing movement to formalise and elevate taverns as safe, well-managed social spaces that contribute meaningfully to local economies. Traders shared personal stories of growth, the tangible business benefits of being part of the programme, and how the upgrades have improved both customer experience and community perception.

Millicent Maroga, Corporate Affairs Director at HEINEKEN Beverages, emphasised the company’s view of taverns as part of a wider ecosystem: “We see tavern owners not just as traders, but as partners in building safer, more responsible and economically vibrant communities. Our vision is to enable them to run thriving businesses that comply with the law, prioritise safety, and serve as positive examples within their communities.”

Creating Generational Wealth and Ending Poverty

Perhaps most impactful is the program’s long-term vision: turning small, often informal taverns into scalable enterprises capable of passing from one generation to the next. By formalizing business operations, offering financial literacy training, and improving access to capital, Heineken is helping entrepreneurs build assets that can be inherited and expanded. This shift from survivalist trading to legacy business ownership is a powerful tool in the fight against generational poverty.

A Model for Business Development

The Township Tavern Transformation stands as a blueprint for inclusive business development. It challenges outdated perceptions of township enterprises and repositions them as legitimate, investable ventures. Heineken is not merely a beverage supplier—it is a partner in progress, committed to a shared future where economic growth is truly inclusive.

Through this initiative, Heineken Beverages is raising a glass to opportunity, dignity, and sustainable development. It’s more than just a transformation—it’s a revolution in how businesses engage with the communities they serve.

Advocate Fati Manamela, Chief Director of the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB), also commended the initiative: “What HEINEKEN Beverages is doing with the Tavern Transformation Programme is a significant step towards reshaping how we view and support township businesses. This kind of public-private collaboration is essential if we are to build a sustainable and inclusive economy.”
