Johannesburg’s retail-meets-lifestyle hub took on a digital pulse this past weekend as MTN officially launched its Shift Gaming Experience at Rosebank Mall on 19 April 2026. The high-energy debut signals the start of a multi-city esports roadshow set to redefine competitive gaming access across South Africa — blending mall culture, immersive tech, and grassroots competition into one bold circuit.
From 24–26 April, the activation opens fully to the public, inviting casual players and competitive hopefuls alike to step into the arena. The format is simple but ambitious: eight malls, two game titles, one national champion, and a R350,000 prize pool at stake.

At its core, the MTN Shift Gaming Experience is about accessibility. Hosted in high-footfall retail spaces, the tournament removes traditional barriers to entry — no elite setups or private leagues required. Instead, anyone can walk in, register, and compete.
The competition spotlights rhythm-based VR hit Beat Saber alongside MTN’s proprietary Battle+ platform, creating a hybrid esports environment that merges physical movement with competitive gameplay.
Tournament operations are managed by African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL), a key player in the country’s esports ecosystem, ensuring professional standards and competitive integrity throughout the tour.

Following its Rosebank debut, the experience will travel across major retail destinations:
- Somerset Mall (15–17 May)
- Woodlands Boulevard Shopping Complex (12–14 June)
- The Glen Shopping Centre (26–28 June)
- Table Bay Mall (10–12 July)
- Clearwater Mall (31 July – 2 August)
- Capegate Shopping Centre (14–16 August)
The journey culminates at Canal Walk Shopping Centre, where both the final mall qualifier and National Finals will run from 26–30 August.
Muyiwa Ladipo, Chief Consumer Officer: Consumer Prepaid at MTN South Africa, emphasises the brand’s strategic investment in gaming culture:
“MTN is committed to connecting South Africans to the things they love, and gaming is one of the fastest-growing passions in the country. Through the Beat Saber competition and the Battle+ platform, we’re giving gamers a chance to compete, connect, and win in ways that go far beyond the screen.”
ALISTER’S VOGUE attended a curated media preview at Rosebank Mall, where the experience revealed its full sensory appeal. From neon-lit gaming pods to the kinetic thrill of VR competition, the setup strikes a balance between spectacle and inclusivity.
Media guests had the opportunity to jump into live matches, test reaction speeds, and engage directly with the competitive format — all while competing for instant rewards, including a R1000 Rosebank Mall shopping voucher. The hands-on approach made one thing clear: this is as much about community engagement as it is about crowning a champion.
Entries for the MTN Shift Gaming Experience are now open. Aspiring competitors can register online via ACGL’s platform and then participate in person at their nearest mall during tournament weekends.
Whether you’re chasing the national title or just stepping in for the thrill, MTN’s latest initiative positions gaming not just as entertainment, but as a shared cultural moment — one mall at a time.
