Renault SA Davis Cup team captain Pietie Norval has named his four-man squad to face Bosnia and Herzegovina in a crucial Davis Cup World Group II tie at Irene Country Club in Pretoria on 19 and 20 September 2026.
Philip Henning, Khololwam Montsi, Alec Beckley and Thando Longwe-Smit will represent South Africa, with Henning set to lead the team’s challenge as they look to build on their dramatic Davis Cup victory at the same venue earlier this year.
There is plenty at stake for the Renault SA Davis Cup team, with the winner of the tie advancing to the 2027 Davis Cup World Group I Play-offs and moving one step closer to competing at the higher level of the international team competition.
Bosnia and Herzegovina will arrive in Pretoria as the higher-ranked nation, currently sitting at No. 39 in the Davis Cup Nations Rankings, while South Africa is ranked No. 58. However, the South Africans will have the advantage of playing on home soil, where they produced a memorable comeback victory against Montenegro in February.
Building on February’s comeback
South Africa’s most recent Davis Cup outing saw the team secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Montenegro in the World Group II Play-offs at Irene Country Club.
After falling 2-1 behind, Henning kept South Africa alive by winning the fourth rubber to level the tie before Beckley held his nerve in the decisive fifth rubber to complete the comeback and secure the victory for the hosts.
That fighting spirit will be called upon again against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The two nations last met in March 2020 in Zenica, where Bosnia and Herzegovina secured a 3-1 victory. Six years later, South Africa will have the opportunity to turn the tables, this time in front of a home crowd in Pretoria.
Henning to lead the challenge
Philip Henning heads into the tie in strong form and will lead the Renault SA Davis Cup team’s challenge.
The 25-year-old recently claimed the M25 Idanha-a-Nova title in Portugal, defeating France’s Dan Added 6-4, 6-3 in the final. The victory adds to an impressive 2026 season for Henning, who reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 250 in June.
As of the 24 August rankings, Henning was ranked No. 272 in singles and No. 449 in doubles.
Henning was also instrumental in South Africa’s February victory over Montenegro, winning both of his singles rubbers, including the crucial fourth rubber which levelled the tie at 2-2.
In-form Montsi returns
Khololwam Montsi returns to the team carrying strong momentum after an impressive run on the professional circuit.
The 24-year-old claimed back-to-back M15 singles titles at Curro Hillcrest in July, winning eight consecutive matches across the two tournaments.
Montsi defeated fellow South African Devin Badenhorst 7-5, 6-4 in the first final before returning the following week to beat Israel’s Ofek Shimanov 6-3, 6-4, securing his second consecutive title.
As of the 24 August rankings, Montsi was ranked No. 704 in singles and No. 735 in doubles.
He is the only member of the current squad who was part of the South African team that travelled to Zenica for the previous meeting between the two nations in 2020.
Six years later, Montsi will have another opportunity to face Bosnia and Herzegovina, this time on home soil and on the back of an encouraging run of form.
Beckley ready to step up again
Alec Beckley returns to the Renault SA Davis Cup team after playing a decisive role in South Africa’s February victory over Montenegro.
With the tie locked at 2-2, Beckley stepped onto court for the deciding fifth rubber and delivered under pressure to complete South Africa’s comeback.
The 24-year-old has continued to make progress on the international circuit, reaching a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 486 in June 2026 and claiming the M15 Gaborone singles title in May.
As of the 24 August rankings, Beckley was ranked No. 560 in singles.
Longwe-Smit adds depth and experience
Completing the squad is Thando Longwe-Smit, who adds further depth and Davis Cup experience to Norval’s team.
Longwe-Smit was part of the South African side that defeated Montenegro in February, partnering Henning in the doubles rubber.
He has remained active on the professional circuit throughout 2026, competing at both World Tennis Tour and ATP Challenger level, including coming through qualifying at South Africa’s ATP Challenger events in May and June.
As of the 24 August 2026 rankings, Longwe-Smit was ranked No. 1185 in singles and No. 1238 in doubles.
Norval believes the combination of recent form, experience and home support gives his team plenty to build on ahead of the tie. “This is an important tie for us. We know the challenge that Bosnia and Herzegovina will bring, but we have home advantage and a team that is hungry to perform,” Norval said.
