There’s a new culinary landmark redefining the local dining scene in Johannesburg North, and it’s called Tasty Nation Eatery—a vibrant, upscale homage to the diverse palate of South Africa. Nestled in the heart of Chilli Lane Shopping Centre in Sunninghill, this newly opened gem is where tradition meets refinement, bringing Africa’s beloved soul food to the table with a touch of luxury.

From the moment you step into Tasty Nation Eatery, you’re enveloped in a warm, modern space that feels both grounded and elevated. Plush textures, rich earth tones, and Afro-chic accents blend seamlessly to create a setting that’s both elegant and unmistakably African. But it’s not just the interiors that impress—the heart of this establishment lies in its unapologetic celebration of authentic South African cuisine, curated and presented with a fine-dining flair.

The menu is like a heartfelt love letter to the nation’s culinary heritage. Durban’s iconic mutton curry arrives at the table in a contemporary cast-iron cocotte, its deep, aromatic richness balanced by delicate house-made roti. The Cape Malay bobotie, fragrant with cloves and cinnamon, is given a modern plating that still honors its traditional soul. And for those seeking nostalgic comfort, the tripe—slow-cooked to buttery perfection—is as luxurious as any French cassoulet. It is exactly what the soul needs.

No South African feast is complete without a braai, and Tasty Nation perfects it to a T! The short ribs were made to perfection. The smoky wors and flame-grilled chicken arrive on handcrafted platters, paired with reimagined sides like buttery samp, sweetcorn purée, and pickled chakalaka. The plating is as intentional as the seasoning, each dish a visual tribute to the vibrancy of the continent.

This vision, however, did not come to life overnight. The founder, Kelly Lewis, first conceptualised Tasty Nation back in 2020, during a time when the world slowed down but culinary dreams quietly brewed. The global pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its launch, but like a stew that simmers to greater depth, the time only enriched the idea. Fast forward to 2025, Tasty Nation Eatery stands as a testament to resilience, heritage, and above all, flavour.

Recently, members of the media and local tastemakers were invited to an exclusive first look at this ‘home away from home’ haven—and the verdict was unanimous. Tasty Nation Eatery is not just a restaurant; it is an experience, a cultural interface where flavour, history, and storytelling meet on every plate.

Social Scene

In a time when culinary spaces often chase global trends, Tasty Nation dares to look inward—honouring the textures, tastes, and tales of our land. It’s where home-grown ingredients are plated with intention and served with pride. A place that reminds us, quite simply, that luxury can taste like home.
